So you’ve been laid off, and these are your first days waking to the realization that you don’t have to go to work. Why get up!?
In fact, if it’s been more than a few days, and those few days have stretched into weeks or months and maybe longer, the question “Why get up” may become more difficult to answer. If it’s been this long, you’ve probably tried all the suggested ways to get work or online job search, and you’re beginning to worry about your unemployment claim coming to an end.
The cruelty to it all is that, if it’s been this long, your debt is probably piling up, too. After all, how does anyone pay all their bills, their mortgage or rent and buy food and the basics within your unemployment check?! Mine barely pays the rent and that’s all.
Pretty depressing….
However, if you allow yourself to fall prey to depression, then the war is lost and not just the battle of getting up in the morning. So how do you navigate a path toward something better, maybe even better than you had before you got laid off?
Start with your mind talk. Start with looking at each day as an opportunity to move forward rather than look back. Start with making a list of things that you believe you do well, maybe even better than everyone else.
If you want the first few things to be humorous, go for it:
1. I drink better.
2. I sleep longer.
3. I ‘m better at laying in the hammock without falling off.
Then hunker down and force yourself to find the real good stuff, the stuff that maybe you’re afraid to admit because what if you’re wrong? What if you’re not so good at it after all?
Doesn’t matter. What matters is that it’s somewhere to start. What matters is that YOU believe you can do it well.
I’ll give you a personal example, last night I was talking with a friend who called to check in on me. I’ve just put my youngest child into college and, as a single parent, now I’m really alone. PLUS, I’m unemployed and “old.”
These are elements that could throw “empty nest syndrome” into “deep, dark rabbit hole syndrome.” That’s when you see the hole and jump into it because it’s easier to be blind and numb than to face changes in your life that challenge you to the core.
Unfortunately, I’ve been there and done that but years ago. So, I’m now the kind of person who faces change head on as an opportunity to conquer it into a focused and, more importantly, productive mass of energy.
What better thing to do with time that was not anticipated than to accomplish things that make you feel good about yourself?! Sometimes, I even allow myself to rest and do nothing, but only as a reward for hard work.
Now, I understand that not all of you out there can relate to this. My personality is something that not all of you would relish.
However, what I do know from the list that I made after feeling sorry for myself in my conversation with my friend, is that my greatest value to all of you out there is that I will do what you may not want to do or what you cannot get yourself to do.
