You’re unemployed and wondering how to make money because unemployment benefits don’t cover your expenses; job search is long and discouraging; you find employers, but they are not calling you for an interview, and jobs resources are often paid memberships that you can’t justify paying for.
What to do! Many of you ultimately occupy yourself with something other than thinking about money and work. Sometimes this is productive and sometimes it’s counterproductive. On Twitter, I’ve seen posts saying they are dreading filling out their unemployment benefits questionnaire so they can get paid. Kind of self-destructive thinking…
I can relate. Been there. The trick is to focus your mind where the GOLD is. This is a trick! How do you stay afloat, pay the bills, perhaps take a rest from stress at work, avoid unemployment stress, take care of the family, and the list goes on….
First, don’t give up on yourself or on the possibilities that are available for you. Perhaps give yourself 24 to 48 hours to decompress, even feel a bit sorry for yourself, and then start doing something. Take action!
Even if its only to physically exercise. Do you know that endorphins, those little biological chemicals that are responsible for feelings of well-being and even love, are generated through exercise?
Take unemployment as an opportunity to set new habits, the first of which is to make yourself feel good, physically, mentally and emotionally. Set it as a priority, one that you have to think hard to change if your spouse, child or friend tempts you into doing something else.
It takes 20 days to set new habits. The first 19 days take self-motivation. Take the fact that you’re out of work as an opportunity to change bad habits. Start now by exercising everyday. Find a regime that makes sense for you and do it!
Through exercise, you will find that’s it’s easier to focus your mind during the day. For one thing, you’ll feel better about yourself. Those little endorphins are doing their magic.
Stress is released through exercise as well. When you’re less stressed, you can focus better. The entire chemical make-up of your body changes for the better facilitating better brain function and processing.
Breathing is increased bringing more oxygen to your cells, including your brain cells. For those who practice yoga and/or meditation, pay particular attention to breathing exercises and meditations for the same reasons.
For the moment, allow yourself to stop thinking about being unemployed or lacking money. Instead focus your mind on what you do have and improve it.
Your health is important. Your self-image is important. Both play important roles in interviewing for jobs and even in how you compose those letters of introduction when you apply for a job and submit your resume.
Start by feeling good. Claim it as yours and don’t allow anyone or anything to take it from you. YOU ARE IMPORTANT as an individual, not just as a family member, as a worker, as a friend, as someone who cares for your pets or for others. Treat yourself with respect.
